Read chapter 8 and 9 of Technology and Society. On 3x5 cards, write EFFECTIVE discussion questions: For each of the two chapters, write 2-3 1-2 questions for opening the discussion; 4-5 3-4 questions for the discussion itself; 2-3 1-2 questions for the closing. You can combine questions for the same section on a single card (i.e., put both opening questions on one card; then closing questions on a separate card...)

• In general, avoid questions that are closed -- yes/no questions, questions with a single right answer (or questions phrased as if there were a single right answer). One exception, in opening questions, you might ask for summary material from the reading that may have limited answers (e.g., "The author lists several reasons that... What are they?")

  Label each of your questions as one of the six types listed.
