Read Ch1 of Technology and Society (TAS). Write out answers to the reading questions (to be turned in).

Preparation questions (be prepared to discuss in class)

  1. What was the origin of this textbook? For whom was it created? Is it appropriate for this course? (preface)
  2. Describe a favorite hypothetical technology, either from fiction or one of your own creation.

Written questions (be prepared to turn in at the beginning of class)

  1. How does the author define “technology”? Does this definition include any things that we might not normally consider to be technology? Does it exclude anything that we typically would consider to be technology? (ch1)
  2. What are some difficulties in creating a humanoid robot? Think of some that are not mentioned by the author. (ch 1)
  3. Choose one of the paradigm shifts from page 6 of the text. Research the origins and be prepared to share it with the class. Explain how or why it was a paradigm shift. (ch 1)
