Assignment
As you read CIC chapter 1, pay special attention to the following terms and questions.
Terms
- computer science
- computer engineering
- information systems
- CPU
- Instruction execution cycle
- data structures
- interdisciplinary fields
Questions
- Develop your own algorithm for building a four-tower sand castle and compare it to the two algorithms given in the book.
- In the section entitled "Man-versus-machine trade-off" (section 1.5 starting on page 18), Hoganson recounts how computers have repeatedly taken over jobs once reserved for humans. Choose an example and explain why the end result was good (or bad) for human beings.
- Now consider the quote on p. 20: "Computer science is approaching a future when the computer can design its own systems and software with minimal input from human designers, leaving humans free for other tasks and pursuits." Let's assume that computers will continue to take over jobs once done by humans. Under what circumstances will this be a good thing? When is it a bad thing?
